Henry
Hoover

Folk Artist, Luthier

The Hoover Canjo is designed after and early 1800's musical instrument created by Mountain Folk in North Carolina. Henry discovered this instrument while studying mountain music folklore. He was intrigued by it simplicity. He built one to play and it was so enjoyable he built another for Alice. As more and more people asked for the instrument, Henry set up his shop and began making Canjos professionally.

Henry uses different types of hardwoods to make each Canjo. The Canjo has a long next with a single banjo string attached to a can. Henry tried many different types of cans to find the right sound and discovered that Spam cans are uniquely suited to the creation of this instrument. Each Canjo comes tuned to the key of D but that can be altered to your personal tastes.

The Canjo is very simple to play and has been a hit with musicians of various skill levels. To help get started each Canjo comes with a music book and pick. It is one of the easiest instruments to learn and yet so much fun to play.

Henry is a native of Allardt, Tennessee. When they are not at a festival selling canjos, or playing in their dulcimer group, they enjoy traveling with their dog Summer.
